Medical Records Technician

At the full performance level, duties of this position include but are not limited to:
Applying, interpreting and analyzing public laws, rules, regulations and exclusions governing the disclosure of health information and confidentiality of the medical record Educating requestors on requirements for submitting health information requests and completing all requests for health information in accordance with applicable laws and regulations Evaluating the adequacy of each completed authorization form Provides advisory and technical assistance to patients, administrative staff and professional staff regarding release of information Searching records or files to compose responses to routine requests for release of patient information Composing detailed explanations in response to correspondence received, arranging information into logical sequence and appropriate format and choosing appropriate words and expressions to convey the desired tone Financial Disclosure Report:

United States Citizenship Experience and Education:
(1) One year of experience that indicates knowledge of medical terminology and general understanding of the health record. Six months of the required one year of experience must have provided the knowledge, skills and abilities (KSAs) needed to perform MRT work; or (2) Two years above high school with a minimum of 12 semester hours directly related to MRT work (e.g., courses in medical terminology, anatomy & physiology, and introduction to health records); or (3) Equivalent combinations of experience and education are qualifying. (For example:
Six months of experience that indicates knowledge of medical terminology and general understanding of the health record and one year above high school with a minimum of 6 semester hours of health information technology courses) English Language Proficiency Grade Determinations:
GS-04 Entry Level:
None beyond basic requirements GS-05 Developmental Level:
One year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level or successful completion of four years of education above high school from an accredited college or university with a minimum of 24 semester hours in health information technology AND demonstrated proficiency in the following Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSA's):
(1) Ability to utilize health information technology and various office software products utilized in MRT (ROI) positions (e.g., the electronic health record, release of information systems, etc.); (2) Knowledge of the Joint Commission requirements and/or health record documentation guidelines; and (3) Ability to manage priorities and coordinate work in order to complete duties within required timeframes and ability to follow-up on pending issues GS-06 Full Performance Level:
One year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level AND demonstrated proficiency in the following Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSA's):
(1) In-depth knowledge of the laws and regulations related to the authorization and disclosure of health information and ability to apply said laws and regulations related to the disclosure of health information (e.g., Privacy Act, Freedom of Information Act, Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) and 38 U.S.C. 7332); (2) Ability to manage priorities and coordinate work in order to complete duties in an accurate and timely fashion; (3) Ability to follow up on pending issues in order to meet required response times; and (4) Ability to research and solve difficult questions related to release of health information in an accurate and timely manner References:
VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G35, Medical Record Technician Qualification Standard The full performance level of this vacancy is GS-06. The actual grade at which an applicant may be selected for this vacancy is in the range of GS-04 to GS-06. Physical Requirements:
The duties of this job are primarily sedentary in nature. The work requires long periods of sitting and viewing documentation on a computer monitor. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50lbs of documentation that arrives from the mail department. Patient mental status and physical habitus will require the incumbent to be able to assist patients complete release of information and other service related forms and well as assist customers understand the processes, policies, and regulations that govern our services. Specific vision abilities required by this job function include but are not limited are close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. Work Schedule:

Don't Be Fooled

The fraudster will send a check to the victim who has accepted a job. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
