RN Chief Nurse Geriatrics and Extended Care

S/he is accountable to the Associate Director/Patient Care and maintains a collaborative relationship with the GECL Manager. S/he has the administrative authority related to the functions and activities of the nursing staff in the GEC. S/he ensures the currency and implementation of all patient care policies, procedures and directives. S/he is responsible for, including but not limited to, area specific quality improvement activities, compliance to accrediting body standards and regulations, related VHA performance measures and monitors, CLC SAIL data, SHEP results, National Patient Safety Goals, and RAI/MDS data/performance. S/he is responsible for the performance of staff in the annual Long Term Care Institute (LTCI) Survey and for the development of an action based on the findings. S/he is also responsible to the performance of the CLCs on the SAIL report and can speak to the measure in meetings and works with staff on action plans if needed. S/he has administrative oversight of the nursing staff in the community contracts program and the Non-VA referrals for Skilled Care purchased in the community. S/he is responsible for keeping the CLC's in a state of constant survey readiness. Work Schedule:

Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant:
The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. OR The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6) OR In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of a current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement for graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. Experience:
5 years of CLC Leadership Grade Determinations:
The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade:
Nurse IV - Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 4-5 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree in nursing or related field and appropriate basic or advanced certification desired, and approximately 3-4 years of nursing practice/experience. Reference:
VA Regulations, specifically VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G-6 Nurse Qualification Standard. This can be found in the local Human Resources Office. Physical Requirements:
Physical qualifications require the ability to stand, walk, bend, and move freely. Must be able to utilize good body mechanics in lifting or restraining patients. Must have good hearing, eyesight, and physical dexterity. Must be clean and neat in appearance. Must be emotionally stable and cooperative. Work involves regular and recurring exposure to infection and contagious diseases. Infection Control Standard Precautions are required as safety precautions; such as hand hygiene, gloves, gowns or masks, which may be required for personal protective equipment and to promote a safe environment.

The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
